Photo taken by Joseph Peter Rhein, 320th Infantry Regiment, 80th Division, American Expeditionary Force, following a flight in this British Royal Air Force plane. The exact date of the photo is unknown.

The 320th Infantry Regiment, 80th Division trained with the Guards Division, Sixth Army Corps. British Third Army after arriving in France on May 31, 1918 and before the Somme Offensive. The Guards Division was composed excusively of the famous regiments of Guards with records centuries old in annals of the British Regular Army. There were Scots, Irish, Welsh, Coldstream, and Grenadier Guards, and their Division stood second to none.

The 80th Division was attached to the British Fourth Army during the Somme Offensive that began on August 8, 1918.

The 320th Infantry Regiment of the 80th Division was part of the 3rd Corps, American First Army and fought beside the British Army at Bethincourt in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive that began on September 25, 1918. According to the New York Times, May 25, 1919, "For this operation there were attached to the 80th Division, the 228th French Artillery Regiment (75's), one battalion of the 289th French Field Artillery Regiment (155's), the 90th Air Squadron, and a balloon company".

It may be that the photo was taken sometime around the above dates or possibly following the Armistice on November 11, 1918 during which time the 320th Infantry Regiment was in winter quarters in towns in the Department of Cote D'Or.

"Following the war, memorial sculpture was erected throughout Pittsburgh. Lawrenceville possesses the greatest First World War sculpture in Pittsburgh, arguably in the entire nation. That sculpture is, of course, 'the Doughboy'.
Joseph Peter Rhein's name is inscribed on the memorial.
